POKER MENTORING - T.NORMAN
I had been playing Texas Hold'em poker online for about nine months, mainly for fun, when I was offered the opportunity to be taken under the wing of an expert mentor. Wanting to step up a gear and
see if I could take my 'fun' game to a higher level and even turn into a profitable player, I jumped at the chance.
After just a few sessions I can honestly say that while it is only early days, I have moved from being, at best, a break-even player, to a winning one. Through mentoring, I have developed a far
greater depth of knowledge and understanding of my strengths and weakness as a player and been guided through a plan to address the latter. On one level, Hold'em is quite a simple game, but to
play to any level of profitability requires a greater understanding of a whole range of skills such as game strategy (especially for MTTs) position, sizing bets, odds, timing, reading opponents and
even table image development.
For some people all this may come naturally, but for most players it needs to be learnt. This can be done through a variety of ways, but for me the input of a mentor has really helped this learning
process.
Anyone can win the odd game with luck and the best cards - learning to win without having the best cards because you played better than your opponents is the major step forward any player must make
if they want to progress.
Thanks to my mentoring I am now on the way towards achieving that goal.
